Well deserved day of rest

Day 20. 4/25/22. Long Beach MS. 0 miles. Rest Day The stats for last week (it was our biggest week): 412 miles. Avg miles per day 68.66, 7 days in Louisiana, total trip miles=1081

I should comment on how lucky we’ve been with weather the last 3 weeks. I only recall one very hot over 90 degree day. We’ve been mostly in the low 80’s and the rain has been non-existent except for one very short rain storm. The weather looking forward is pretty similar. In other words… not hot! We have had our fair share of head wind but locals told us it always comes out of the southeast this time of year. So that’s to be expected. With the configuration of Jim and my bike, we are like a block against the wind. No streamlining whatsoever. Curt is much more streamlined with a fairing and lower to the ground. The Louisiana roads were not kind to our bottoms this week. Leaving Texas we thought we had saddle sores mastered but Louisiana has a different kind of highway building and maintenance…so new saddle sore issues. We’d be better if we had not run out of chamois butter and didn’t arrive in New Orleans early enough to get to a bike shop. Now there’s one in Gulfport but it doesn’t open until 10am. We will be far past that town at 10am. We’re looking at another one coming up tomorrow afternoon (on route). Hope there’s salvation there! Not like there’s very many bicycle shops in these small towns.

We started a new map yesterday

Oh boy did I sleep well last night. I barely made it through my salad and I was asleep until 7:30am! Feeling normal today…maybe a little tired but so.much.better😊

The usual rest day activities. A little shopping for road snacks, Curt’s journey to Walmart. By the end of this trip he’ll know his way around the store. Another electronics mission. Noise cancelling earbuds for the busy roads. Jim and I travelled to the local laundromat. Then it’s bike cleaning and daily route planning.

A little tent drying out from a couple days ago. It was a dewy morning
Mississippi grocery shelves. Local cuisine
A whole section dedicated to crawfish boils
Another reason you know you are south of the Mason-Dixon line! Look at all those grits choices

While the guys work on bikes, I’m hanging out in the shade poolside looking across the road at the Mississippi Sound and fine, white sandy beach. Yes…I’m getting off easy😜

We just spent about 2 1/2 hours finalizing our stops for the final 2 weeks. Looks like we will be spending some time at Florida State Parks, a layover with our friend Jamie’s sister in Tallahassee and then on to St Augustine. I have booked an AirBnb for a few days of decompression. Time to get bicycles packed and shipped, tour St Augustine, sit on a Florida beach and relish the adventure!

Let’s see how our ride to Bayou LaBatre goes. About 70 miles…again😊. Over and out
