Gulf Coast roads to Florida

Day 22. 4/27/22. 63 miles, AIS 5:27 hrs, 580 elev., 11.5 mph

Bayou LeBatre, MS to Big Lagoon State Park, Perdido Key, FL

It should be noted for the last several days…since Louisiana mostly, any elevation gains in the stats are not climbing hills but up and over bridges. The riding has been very flat. Can’t say that bothers me🤣🤣

It was actually chilly this morning when we departed just before 6:00am to the Waffle House breakfast. The inside of Waffle House was air conditioned for later in the day. It was even colder inside there. Anyway, nothing super fantastic to report about their breakfast. But we ate it for sure! With a double jacket for a little warmth we set off to catch the Ferry to Dauphin Island AL. 21 miles down the road. We arrived plenty early…so for a change we had some down time…about 1 hour to wait. They had nice picnic tables in the pedestrian waiting area.

From our start to catch the ferry from Dauphin Island.
First we had to cross this bridge to Dauphin Island

All aboard
Note that the water is very brown in this part of the Gulf of Mexico
Leaving the dock

As scheduled at 9:30 am we were off toward Fort Morgan and Gulf Shores AL. 1/2 hr ferry ride. We set off again for a nice gulf coast scenic ride past numerous stilted, colorful beach houses. Then we had about 13 miles of fresh asphalt bicycle trail. I thought that part of the ride today was “delicious”! There were many senior aged people using the trails on their e-bikes. I was happy to see them out enjoying the beautiful trail system. The trail took us through a state park with a terrific scenic overlook. Once again the roads, shoulders and trails were the result of Hurricane Sally I believe. For a change we had tail winds just about all day.

This particular area of beach houses really was colorful. All new and shiny
Interesting Airstream food trucks at a private resort
The “delicious” bike trail we rode for 13 miles
Looks like we’re entering a big beach town!
Really cool overlook in the state park with the trail through it. (See if you notice what’s so funny in this video)

Since it was a fairly short day we were at our State Park campground by 3pm. So early for us. Curt volunteered to ride back about 1/2 mile to the Winn-Dixie (grocery store)…cold fried chicken and a nice salad package for dinner. We’ve eaten at so many restaurants lately it was nice to just stay put and eat simply.

The water has changed to a beautiful blue
I heard from a friend that this is a good bar but we zipped right on past. Too early in the day🤣🤣
We made it to Florida…I think we can finish this!!
Crossing the Perdido Key bridge
Curt has been getting bit quite frequently it seems. His legs have looked like this for over a week. But now he’s got little ones on his fingers, back of arms, and chest. I wonder if it because he cruises so close to the ground? Jim and I have nothing of any of these.

Took a stroll of the park after dinner and spotted a small alligator and lots of turtles in a pond with a protected wood walkway over the pond. That was my first live gator sighting. He wasn’t enormous. Super cool looking fella😊. Picture later.

That’s it for today. Everyone had an enjoyable, simple, easy, flat cruise today. Tomorrow we tackle Pensacola area. But…we made it to Florida!! States are going quickly now
