First Flat…

Day 1. Oct 1, 2024 Clinton to Sedalia MO

42 mi. AIS (ass in saddle): 4:14 min. 10.0 mph. Elev. 616 ft.

At the trailhead. Sarah, Katy, Margie, Suzy and Paul

Today’s volunteer sag driver was me (Suzy). I drove to the trailhead start and range the starting bell to send them off. It was a sunny but cool morning. The day pleasantly warmed into the 70’s.

and they’re going off…

About 9 miles into the ride just after the town of Calhoun, Paul got the first flat. Being an experienced cyclist he fixed it pretty fast. Only had to do it once!

Handy location to have a flat!

View at the start. Most of the day was a canopy of trees.

Lunch stop was in Windsor. It has a large Amish community. Lots of horses and buggies around the town. We thought that was pretty cool.

Lovely ride all day to the final destination of Sedalia MO. Everyone seemed comfortable and strong.

After lunch I drove to the Sedalia train station and bicycled back to meet everyone. While riding I passed the Missouri State Fairgrounds. They have a huge fairgrounds and grandstand. Today there was a gathering for an Airstream Convention. We saw so many RV’s in the distance while riding near the fairgrounds.

The Sedalia train station was beautifully restored. It is a treasure to the city.

Piece of artwork that represents Sedalia from its beginning to now. Notice that the end has bicycles.

Tonight we are staying at a nice large AirBnb house. 3 room and beds for all. The kitchen was well stocked. Very comfortable. Big garage to fit the trailer and everyone’s bicycles too. The e-bikes are charging. Perfect place!

Downtown Sedalia is pretty impressive. It’s mostly older brick buildings that have been restored. A beautiful 6 story Hotel Bothwell, original Carnegie Library and a beautiful Catholic cathedral to name a few places we noticed. It was dark so I wasn’t able to capture photos of downtown. The town population is about 22,000.

I have a 96 year old aunt that has lived here for years. My dad’s baby sister. We found out she is still living at her home and her 3rd son is taking care of her. Unfortunately she has alot of dementia so we were not able to see her. It’s nice to know she’s had a good life in such a beautiful town in Missouri.
