Cycling the River Tweed

Last Day in the Borders Countryside

Day 7

July 20, 2025

Stats: 20 miles, AIS: 1:41, Elev. 537 ft., Speed: 12mph

The three of us took a nice simple easy-peasy ride this morning following the River Tweed along the Scotland/England border. Up one side of the river passing into England then crossing the bridge back into Scotland and up the river back to Kelso. It’s Sunday morning so the traffic was really light and the road surface was smooth and fast.

Now I’m noticing more recycling uses of these iconic phone booths. This one is a book library! Some of them actually have phones though

The savory pies in a variety of styles and flavors. You can expand the picture to read the types. They all looked good!

After the bakery stop we came to the midpoint of the ride crossing the River Tweed into Coldstream. I like the name of this town. The view of the town from the bridge was pretty.

Kelso is called the Market Hub of the region. It seems to have 4-5 roads leading into town. We managed to ride 4 different directions on the last 4 days. Everyday had great roads to ride and lots of little villages to ride through.

We packed up our baggage and were out of Kelso at 12 noon today headed back to Glasgow … the Holiday Inn in Carmunnock area for the evening.

Tomorrow we head out to the islands by ferry for the final 3 days. We are headed to Islay Island… one of the Inner Hebrides Islands. In Scottish it’s pronounced. “Eye-la”. It will be a long drive, long ferry ride and a bicycle ride to Port Charlotte where our accommodations are located. We’ll be leaving the van at the ferry parking lot and riding self-contained for the island.
