6 days to Launch

Flying to San Diego on Saturday Leap Day 2/29. Launching from the ocean shore in San Diego on Sunday March 1.

Preparations are wrapping up. Panniers are packed and weighed. It’s like a puzzle… organizing the gear by usage and then packing for weight distribution (side to side and front to back). We’ve been told you want about a 60/40 weight split from front to back so you have more control of the front of your bike (especially downhill)

For airplane baggage purposes, we each have a cheap drawstring laundry bag that will hold two front panniers and one rear pannier. That will be one piece of checked baggage and the bike box will be two. The other rear pannier will be carry on and the handlebar bag will be “personal bag” (purse).

I need to keep this handy until I learn where it all goes!
Front panniers. Right and left and contents 9# each

Front handle bar bag and contents 4.5#

Rear panniers. Right and left and contents. 8# each

Now it’s time for Jim to pack the bike boxes. We used boxes for an e-bike because they are wider and will fit our bikes with the racks attached. Handlebars, saddle, pedals, front wheel, front rack all come off. Everything is padded and secure. Must be under 50# and 115” linear to be checked as baggage on Delta airlines.

Weighs 49#. Just made the weight limit!
