Day 10 & 11. Rest day in Mesa AZ Mesa to Globe

Map 2. The profile and the state map route

The best laid plans….woke up early prepared to make the ride northerly to Roosevelt Lake then southerly (is that a word?) to Globe. On this route it is mostly forest service land with just a couple of towns, most without motels. We had planned to “dry camp” but Phoenix area is having a monster rain storm expecting flash floods. It would take 2 1/2 days and a lot of climbing to get to Globe, all of them in this downpour. Plan B: use our friend Tom’s truck to transport our bikes and two of us to Days Inn motel in Globe. Jim drives truck back to Mesa and his sister Annette/Larry ( who happen to be in the Phoenix area for one more day) give Jim a ride back to Globe. So essentially we have fast-forwarded 2 days and hopefully will only have 1 bad rainy day. We shall see!

From the truck. Good shoulder for awhile
Fear factor. Note the “shoulder” and the tunnel. This lasted several miles. This was the “old ACA” route. Because of this situation they rerouted triangularly north and south to Globe adding an extra 2 days. See map

Curt and I chilled in our motel room and checked out downtown Globe. It’s a copper mining town. Like many mining towns it is quite hilly and is suffering from downturn. Lots of burned out buildings on one side of town. But the unusual gem in this little community is we found an Asian fusion restaurant called Bloom. Aside from the usual Mexican restaurants they have fresh sushi and many other delicious meals. Lucky us😊

Special thank you to Tom and Linda for letting us use their RV and pickup. To Annette and Larry for chauffeuring us to bicycle shops and REI in Tempe AND transporting Jim to Globe. Hopefully that will be our only weather reroute. Probably not….

  1. Oh my, I just jumped on to see how the travels are going! I didn’t know about the origin of this trip and your bio of it is so cool. Also, I assumed this was a mass gathering of bikers participating, wrong assumption. You fearless three; Suzy, Jim and Curt have a great time and safe travels. Until next time…Cheers! Love, Annette
