Day 13. Are you ready to Rumble? 78mi ais 6:25

Globe AZ to Safford AZ

Hey it’s Friday the 13th! It was a cool day temps made it into the 60’s. Never took my leggings off but did abandon the headband and warm gloves after the first climb. We did encounter one rainstorm right before lunch that we had to suit up jacket and pants. It did not last long. There were rainstorms around us we could see in the distance but our timing was good.

Today’s ride according to our map guide warned us the shoulders were going to be rough. They weren’t kidding! In general the width was good but it was a question of the rumble strips and/or the frost heaves about 10ft apart. I had mentioned in an earlier post about the debris and heaves but today it’s about the width of rumble strips. We had everything today. Including the widest strips any of us had ever seen. See photos!!

Unusual landscaping. I called it bushwhacking. It hits Curt right in the face The bushes have thorns (it’s Arizona everything is spiny)
The biggest widest rumble we’ve ever experienced! Unrideable. Where are the bikes suppose to go???
If you have to rumble the shoulder this width is best. Still a good amount of shoulder to ride
The perfect shoulder width with NO rumble😊👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌

We had a beautiful ride with mountains on both sides of us. One of the washes was running full tilt but it was on a downhill descent so I didn’t stop for a photo. Mostly we travelled through an Apache Indian Reservation. Home of the State Basketball Champs in Fort Thomas.

Highlight of today’s ride came near the end when the shoulder was really bumpy. Mile 65 or so. There was an advertising campaign for Taylor Freeze like Wall Drug or Burmashave. It must have been a sign every 1/4 mi for 4 miles. How can you NOT stop for ice cream or a taco (or both) after you’ve been reading those signs for miles!! It was just the pit stop we needed to get us the last 9 miles into Safford

Riding into Pima. Home of Taylor Freeze. See sign in the background Note the constant cracks across the shoulder. Bump, bump, bump
Taylor Freeze likes cyclists

Staying in the rec room of an RV Park tonight. We have it all to ourselves. 2 showers, laundry, kitchen, tv. Couches. All the comforts of home for $10 each. We really like these RV accommodations. All’s well in our world today😊

Friday baked cod fish special. Filled the tummy and was yummy
RV Rec room. Home for the night

  1. If most of the ride was through a reservation that perfectly explains the poorly maintained road. The Gov at work- or not.
Love the signs to the bike friendly Taylor shop. Did you kind of want to trade bikes with that motorized hog parked behind you?
