Day 17. Biggest climb of the ride

So…today we conquered our biggest climb of the entire ride. It was not simple. In 40 miles we climb 4800ft to the top of Emory Pass. Took the better part of the day. Switch backs the last 2 miles. 16mile romp down the other side to a little town Hillsboro. There isn’t much here as and because of Covid-19 everything is shutting down. However, a little RV Park was open (just barely). She let us in to tent camp, showed us how to turn on/off the shower before she had to leave town! She also rents out retro campers but they are full tonight with the Adventure Cycle tour. We are thankful. The AC group gave us their leftover dinner because this town has no grocery and cafe is closed. The AC group is disbanding. There’s this feeling of doom all around us. Tomorrow we will ride 85 miles (mostly flat) to Las Cruces. Not sure but it could be really close to the end of the line.

Leaving Silver City and the reality of what people do for a living in this are
Going up
Riding through the Gila National Forest
A break at the top
Me and my honey posing at the summit
Taking a break…resting my braking hands
Downhill to Hillsboro

In short we went from climbing exhilaration to deflated enthusiasm in 16 miles! The photos are still good though😊

Cutest camper RV Park
The bathroom/shower
Our Adventure Cycle companions. Fed us dinner and gave us all the extra snacks

  1. You can’t stop now. I’ve become hooked on following along every day, with google maps on satellite view giving me the big picture while the excellent photos get my “boots on the ground”. Hate to see you have to hang up your cleats, but with the pandemic dogging your trail, you may not have a choice. Best of luck. By the way, your last photo of the Adventure Cycling van has two bikes on a rack on top. The forward black bike on the rack looks a lot like my Specialized Diverge which I ride daily. I think that bike is a Diverge just like mine, right down to the custom wheels.

  2. You guys are doing great, so enjoy following your ride. Hope you get to continue. So boring here in Missoula. So quiet you can hear a pin drop outside.

Nice that the adventure cyclists were there too but sorry to hear about their disbanding.
