Day 18. Hillsboro to ?? Las Cruces

We left Hillsboro with a good early start. Breakfast of Starbucks instant coffee( it’s good) and PopTarts (gift from ACA friends). I haven’t had a pop tart since I was a kid but they’re loaded with calories so a pretty good choice for quick exit. Great little RV camp spot with no street lights so beautiful starry dark skies. When you have to take a middle of the night tent exit to pee it’s nice to have a starry sky😊

Pop tarts and coffee

We weren’t certain if we were going to get to Arrey, Hatch or Las Cruces. All rain dependent. Cruised through Arrey when it began to rain. Suited up and made it to Hatch. It wasn’t raining hard but it was steady. Our rain gear is good but we all thought maybe moteling up in the only motel in Hatch would be good. I also had a hankering for some Hatch Green Chile food! However the lonely little motel was full…migrant workers in the green Chile, pecan and whatever other food products grow in the Rio Grande Valley. We did find a place to hole up in a closed laundromat next to the motel. We considered just camping in there but some young girls from town also knew it was a hideaway so that wasn’t going to workout. Curt decided we should make a sign at the gas station near the I-25 to ask for a ride to Las Cruces about 40 miles away. 3 riders, 3 bikes, $150. Got a ride within 5 minutes. Juan our friendly “non-Uber” said he goes to Las Cruces for gas so he felt like he won the lottery today. We thought the same thing. We are comfortably warm and dry in a motel👍🏻👏🏻🙌

Unexpected 6 miles of road construction. Even with this New Mexico wins the road report A+. All pretty smooth surfaces and drivers are extremely courteous

Tonight we look at map #3 and make a plan for Texas and what lies ahead. I think towns are few and far between so social distancing is easy.

  2. Glad to hear you are having good roads and friendly drivers in NM. I rode a tour there, I think it was called ‘Land of Enchantment” and had more broken glass on the shoulder and pick up drivers trying to hit us than anywhere else I’ve ever ridden. I have told everyone that I would never again ride a bike in NM; now I might reconsider!
