Day 24. Day 5 Texas Marathon to Sanderson 55 mi

My attempt at a panorama. Miles and miles of Texas

I want to start with this music link:). It says it all. Will only take about 30 seconds to get the drift. We had another fast day in the saddle. Not another town for 55 miles. The deputy in Marathon seemed like he was making sure we left town this morning. He took a drive East and turned around to head back after he went past us. Goodbye Marathon!

We met some nice people in Marathon from a social distance. The grocery store checkout young man wasn’t sure of the price of the yogurt so he gave us all 3 free. Then this morning at the coffee shop they gave us all the almond cookies that were a day old! Cyclists will eat everything.

I love the old hotels in these towns. Word is that Gage ran Judge Roy Bean out of Marathon
Hotel courtyard
The generous coffee shop. Had to call and order coffee and then they came out and gave it to us. Social distancing

Sleeping outside on the rooftop last night was really a treat. It’s nice to wake up at night and just look at the stars. Wasn’t cold either. Low was in the 50’s.

The “locked and loaded” campsite 3 miles down the road. Actually looks pretty good:)

Just finished our ride. Earliest finish yet. 2:30pm. That includes Jim’s two flats back-to-back! That takes about an hour ( including unloading and loading your bike….twice!) Lunch stop on this hot and lonely highway was under a railroad bridge. Smelled a little of creosote. Started the ride at about 60’ and finished at 93’. Hanging out on the artificial turf at an RV Park in the shade of the picnic shelter. Yes…it’s hot.

Flat total #4. Jim’s first
1/2 mile later flat #5. Jim’s second. Curt rode back because it took us so long, he figured something was wrong
Old windmill
Lunch shade. The best we could find for miles
First AstroTurf camping. End of a hot day 97’

  1. Is it glass or goat heads? Maybe you should have had those tubeless tires
    Love the gage hotel.
Why was the sheriff department so evil? It’s not like you were long hairs on motorcycles doing drugs

  2. Under the highway reminded me of lunch under the culvert on the dirt road next to a country school on our way to Polar on Spa to Spa

  3. Really enjoy reading your observations and am hoping you can continue to the coast. Can you figure out how to convince Curt to stay on the road? I swear, every time I read of your day, I flash back to summer of ’78 Denver to SF, or was it summer of ’82 Denver to Grand Canyon or was it Boston to Acadia, I can’t remember what I remember, but it sure feels good!! thanks againfor rekindling the memories…..

  4. I am really enjoying this blog!! It’s kind of like being there but without the saddle sores

Please be extra careful Montana is under a stay at home order and it can’t be long before the other 30 states follow
Be safe, have fun and come home to us with more great stories
