Crushing hot…need water!

Day 2. 51 mi. Ais (ass in saddle) 4:47

Bracketville to Camp Wood

A little info about Officers Quarters from last nights camp
The officers quarters

Today started out glorious! We were on a back country (ranch) road. About the only vehicles were TDOT. We had 30 great miles with no traffic, slight tailwind and decent asphalt surface. We stopped every 10 miles to catch some shade and snacks.

Imagine that kind of water rushing over the road
West Prong of the Nuecas River. In Montana we call them “Forks”

Then..we merged with a new Highway. A little more traffic (still not terrible) but the temperature increased exponentially. Shade was a minimum. We had 18 miles to go but it was rough. Curt got a couple water bottles filled by TDOT, shared it with us. But just 5 or so miles down the road my legs started to cramp. Found some shade under a big live oak tree. Helpful but not for long. Another oak tree stop after a few miles. Finally with about 4 miles to go, we had to stop for road construction. Nice TDOT flag man gave us 5 really cold water bottles!! Saved us!!! Then in 2 miles we made it to the Dam Store. We were anxious to get inside air conditioning. Eat cold things…popsicles, Gatorade.

Looking ahead to Hill Country. Ready or not…
The Dam Store. Sanctuary

Not sure the exact temp today but easily 95-100.

Dam this felt good

Staying at RV Patk in Camp Wood along the Nueces River. The water is clear and cold. Relief from such a hot day. So many restaurants closed on Tuesday. The gas station made us pizza. Pretty good actually. Rolled over to a local park where there was a massive kids birthday party with squirt guns.

Exhausted today. Tomorrow is going to be a different kind of hard. Cooler temps but windy, windy AND Texas hill country to boot! We are expecting rolling steep hills. 😱. Here we go😜

  2. You are off to a great start with the blog. Great photos. Keep em comin.

If it makes you feel better, we had really big wind all day yesterday here in Billings. Going any kind of west was a major fight especially on the path on top of the Rims, where the wind fetches from the foothills 60 miles away. I had to take ibuprofen last night to get to sleep. Riding into the wind really stirs up the arthritis in my hands and fingers.

May the wind be at your back, and the road slip beneath your tires with a nice effortless hum all day. Okay, that’s a pipe dream. But good luck. Great bloggo!

  3. The Fort remind me of Fort Keough construction. I loved you take of hot, hot hot and the Dam Store. Antlers and alfalfa in one place—got my curiosity. Well, the hill country should be lovely. I hope the blue bonnets are in bloom. Thank you for letting me ride with you on photos and stories. Oh, I will salute any DOT truck I see.

  4. You guys are making me so envious as I sit on my A__ at my desk in windy Missoula. Keep up the commentary. Did you buy any deer antlers for your handlebars?

    Ride on!
