Threading the storm needle

Day 25. 4/30/22. 57 miles. AIS 5:02 hrs. 1138 elev. 11.4 mph

DeFuniak Springs FL to Marianna FL

This is it! We’re on Map 7. The last segment of the Southern Tier. If everything goes as planned we will finish a week from today!

Putting on damp clothes. We had one morning in Louisiana where our overnight washed bike clothes didn’t dry out. Since we’ve arrived in Florida they are never dry in the morning. Doesn’t matter if they are on the line outside or inside. Most of the time you put them on damp and with the humidity you can’t really tell after a few minutes! Honestly I haven’t spent a lot of time in humid states or countries. It would take some adjusting time for me to like it full time.

It’s Saturday morning and once again we have the pleasure of low traffic volume until about 10/10:30am. It’s just nice to ride and hear birds rather than vehicles. We were on the same Hwy 90 ALL day but overall it was lighter and slower moving traffic than yesterdays. Gives you a chance to relax your shoulders, look around a little and enjoy the weather.

Once again we had some high points and low points. An easy bit of climbing today. Enjoyable
Aha! The fountain of youth town. Unfortunately there wasn’t really anything in this town. Days gone by..

Thinking about weather….we knew there were thunderstorms in the forecast. Somehow by luck and planning we managed to be behind or ahead of them today. We were dry all day. At one point we pulled over because we could see the dark clouds ahead. We sat it out for about 10 minutes. Saw a few good lightning bolts and a couple loud cracks of thunder. The kind that make you jump! The last 4 miles into Marianna we pushed a little faster to stay ahead of the next one rolling in. Made it 😊

Waiting the storm out

Crossing the river. Choctawhatchee River. I like the name of this river. Saturday morning the boat ramp parking lot had many boat trailers parked. Busy place on a Saturday. Also really liked the swampy area we crossed called appropriately Alligator Creek.

Curt and Sandy. We came upon our friend Sandy…ie The Sandman…he comes in and out of our day like blowing sand🤣
Chocktawhatchee River (cool name)
Alligator Creek

Small towns in southern states…Festivals. Bakeries, Convenience stores. This is a whole subject I intend to dive into on my “break day”. I’ve been mulling this over for weeks. Hahahaha. Coming soon😊

Curious what Worm Fiddlin’ music sounds like? If it were next weekend I could listen and learn.
Curious what this place was like in its heyday. And wonder when it’s heyday ended?

We are in search of some pizza tonight. Not chain pizza but local. Took a bike ride to get there. No ambiance….zero. It was mostly takeout. Oh well…it tasted okay and we ate it. Remind myself, this is middle America, not a gourmet trip😜
