Day 31. 5/6/22. 57 mi. AIS 5:02 hrs., 698 elev., 11.3mph
Gainesville FL to Palatka FL
I swear that everyday in this ride across America (both Part 1 and Part 2) has been Curt’s Traveling Recumbent Road Show and Jim and I are his escorts! I doubt there has not been a day where he hasn’t elicited some curiosity and evoked some kind of question about his recumbent bicycle. It usually begs the question, where we are going and where we started. Even though we are on an established route that for years has come through the same towns, there are always people who have never heard of The Southern Tier bicycle route. I’m not surprised actually, so few people in America can fathom riding a bicycle across their home town much less a state or the country.

We are one day away from accomplishing our goal of San Diego CA to St Augustine FL (albeit with a 2 yr interruption). We took our time today to soak it in. Most of the ride today was on bicycle trails (rails to trails). About 30+ miles. Really, really nice smooth asphalt. There were maintenance trucks on the trail blowing the leaves etc off. He was just behind us for quite awhile. I termed him “the vulture”. After a bit, I stopped to ask him how often he blows the trail. Twice a week it gets driven, they also mow the edges and clean up litter and bigger debris (Mondays and Fridays). Thank you Florida😊

You three are awesome! Yes, we ran into the same dead end on the same trail! If you aren’t careful, you will run into one tomorrow as well! I have really enjoyed your posts. Even though we all rode the same route, your pace gave you more ‘landing pads’ than we had, so in a way, looks like a different trip. Enjoy rolling into salt water tomorrow!
