Day 31. Waiting… as the storm leaves

9/17/23.

Another day passes as we get ready to start riding again tomorrow (Monday). The storm moved out last night with some wind this morning. The clouds moved out and the sun came out by afternoon and the wind decreased. It was beautiful by 4pm… a little chill in the air but the air was crisp snd clear. Leaf matter plastered on the ground but Digby missed the brunt of it. We shall see how it looks as we head east closer to the Bay of Fundy shoreline over the next few days.

You can see the clouds moving further east
and out of Digby
The line up of trucks for tree removal.
Not too busy it seems. Everyone’s relieved.

We didn’t really have much to do today. Finished up the Cabot Trail route plans and accommodations. Took a walk back out to the wharf to look at the scallop (scawl-up) boats. Checkout a video of scallop fishing… it’s very interesting. Hard work for sure. They drag the ocean floor to scoop them up. Haul they onboard and sort them on the deck. Then they are hand shucked and the shells thrown overboard while they are out at sea.

This boat the nets come over the side
A big flat deck area where they dump the scallops for sorting and shucking.
I liked the name of this boat.
Plus it has an enormous deck.
I have to admire how tightly they packed all the boats in… they were 5 rows deep!

They get the scallops out of the Bay of Fundy and Annapolis Basin. They get lobsters on the west side of Nova Scotia at Yalmouth. It’s across from Maine. I also think they get lobster along the Atlantic side by Halifax and the Bay of Fundy. We haven’t really seen all the lobster boats yet. Apparently whale watching is a big tourist draw at Yalmouth and Cape Breton in the summer and early fall.

A few lobster traps and floats.
Nice view of the basin today about 5pm. Storm is gone!

Odds and ends… things I saw today

Meat pies in the frozen food section. My sister Jean had wondered if we’d eaten this yet. This is the first I’ve seen and not on a menu yet.
Acadian meat pie.
In Nova Scotia all liquor is controlled by the province. So the grocery store has all the Non-Alcohol varieties. This one is for my friend Mark…
if he ever feels so inclined ( hahaha)!
This one is for my hockey lovin’ friend Shelagh😊

Can’t wait to get back on route tomorrow and see the Nova Scotia Annapolis Basin. 42 miles is the plan with an interesting community called Bear River along the way. We’ve had a great stay in Digby… our Bed and Breakfast was quite comfortable, great owner and really good breakfasts! Memorable place for our first hurricane ever!
