Day 49. Day 5 -Cabot Trail. And that’s a wrap…

Belle Cote to Nyanza, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia

The final day on our bicycles. Short ride but it was absolutely the perfect final day. We were riding in the Margaree River valley following the river for the first 10 miles or so. The leaves were really changing color in the valley which made the scenery so fantastic. We had a back road for 10 miles with next to no cars. It was cool and crisp this morning.

Finally we are seeing the fall color
Margaree River valley. Salmon fishing
The red trees are so irresistible

We were both relishing the views and the whole trip. It is hard to believe that we have been riding for 7 weeks! We’ve had such a good time.

We planned to ride to breakfast at The Dancing Goat. It is a very popular bakery, breakfast and lunch spot. It lived up to the hype. Blueberry pancakes were good and so was the coffee. Andre showed up while we were eating and we had a nice visit. Then he was off to make the final motel room drop for us.

Breakfast this morning

He had warned us that the final 20 miles would have a stretch of rough road surface and then new asphalt and then one more “ mountain” to climb… Hunters mountain. That’s exactly what we found. The rough road wasn’t as bad as some we had already ridden, the new asphalt was as smooth as a baby’s bottom and Hunter’s Mtn was “a piece of cake”! And just like that we were at our motel for the remainder of the day. Enough time to get laundry done and fresh clothes for the “ city” (Halifax) and airports (3).

First time they’ve warned us the road
is going to be bad.
It looked like this for miles
Irresistible

We are a 10 minute ride to the Maritime Bus Stop in Wagmatcook tomorrow morning. Bus stop is at 9:20am. We know the routine.. buy a big plastic bag for our bicycles. Take the front wheel off. Store our panniers in the laundry bag. The bus ride is 5ish hours to downtown Halifax. The bicycle shop (Ross) is ready and expecting us… they will box our bikes. We are staying at a WarmShowers host (Mike) and he is ready for us too! The details are falling into place. The last piece of the puzzle is getting our boxes from the bike shop on Saturday to our airport hotel. I’m looking at renting a Turo minivan for 1 day. Stay tuned for the final decision on that leg of the logistics!

Now this is some bad road… but this is not the one they warned us about!
You just pick a line through the cracks and hang on! Where would you ride?

Wrap it all up…

We will have all the final numbers coming soon. My stats man (Jim) will get all the details. This will probably happen with all the airport time we have getting home Sunday… or not. But it will happen soon!

Tomorrow…

Bus, bikes and Mike’s house. The bus stops will retrace several of the small towns we rode through or stayed overnight. It will be interesting to see them from the highway. We will be on the TransCanada highway. We were only on that specific highway for a few short miles. I’m excited to see the fall colors. Our exit timing is good… big, wet weather and winds are coming to Nova Scotia Saturday night. Hope it doesn’t affect our 5am departure Sunday morning.

    1. It was very different in scenery but so similar in the daily routine. What’s the best is not knowing what is around the next bend every single day and looking forward to finding out!
