A Glimpse of Nelson BC

Day 7. 8/25/24. Nelson BC

LAYOVER DAY

Well deserved zero day today. In layovers there’s always tasks to be done. Most importantly…laundry, then some bicycle maintenance. Today our chains really needed some lube attention, cleaned the brakes, check the bolts on racks and tire pressure. We’re good to go!

Our motel… The Alpine Inn is uphill from downtown Nelson. There’s a small market with coffee and pastry nearby… called Uphill Market, so that’s where we headed for a morning treat. The motel has laundry so that was easily done with a few “looney” dollars while relaxing in our room. Today was warm and sunny… another beautiful BC day.

The Alpine Motel

Spent most of the afternoon relaxing then we headed down the hill (walking) to checkout the Main Street area. Since it’s Sunday many places were closed but we enjoyed looking at the homes on hills and going all the way down to the pier on West Kootenay Lake.

Nelson seems to be home to a young demographic. There’s several outdoor type stores for summer and winter season. The local ski area is Whitewater. It’s 20 km (12 mi) away. We were here with our Cinnicrew about 8 years ago.

It’s my understanding that Nelson is known as the “Hippy Capitol” of Canada. It was a popular place for Vietnam draft dodgers. They came and never left. We have noticed several VW Westfalia vans in the area of a vintage age!

How about being a mailman in Nelson!
Nice looking hotel up those stairs. Not conducive to bicycles with gear
Like the old building but checkout the sky
Down to the pier
The hill in the background is where we came into town… we road across from right to left
We could see Nelson from far above!
Looking at main business area
from the pier
“Puff” the Dragon Boat
The bridge you would take to get to the ferry we rode several days ago

Stopped at a local brewery for a beer and then we found a Korean dinner spot with delicious Korean food and sushi. Yummy!

Our restaurant. Sushi Wood
So many things I like on this menu
What we actually chose to eat. Guess I’ll have to come back for my Korean favorites
Cool murals in Nelson
Back up the hill. Stairs are easier
that’s for sure
This slide was at a former school… definitely former

Trekked back uphill to the motel. Plan to depart tomorrow morning toward Metaline Falls WA… bye bye Canada… helllo USA. By now you know we will have to head uphill immediately from the motel…. Weather looks good. Cool 48* when we start…66* when we finish.

Goodnight from Nelson BC

  1. You pointed out the “Hill” you came down yesterday and you could look down and see Nelson from up there. That hill looks high enough to be a mountain. Canada really does close up on Sundays.

  2. When you get to Metalline Falls consider going south past Sullivan Lake to LeClerc road. Very pleasant and gets you off the highway all the way to Newport.
