Day 6. 10/7/24. Layover day in Hermann MO

Since it was a layover day we had a relaxing start to the day with coffee and zucchini bread. Beautiful morning. Our AirBnb was right along the railroad tracks and many trains went through last evening. But… they don’t use whistles (thank goodness). We are so close to the tracks that the brick building we are in shakes as they roll past. It did not stop me from sleeping well though.
First tasks of the day were laundry and cleaning dusty bikes and lubing chains. The “sisters” packed garbage bags with everyone’s laundry and walked through town to the laundromat… little less than a mile away. While it was washing we walked around the town, found a coffee shop with light breakfast and walked back to dry the clothes. While drying we played Bananagrams. It’s a speed scrabble type of game. “We” are word gamers!
Jim took care of the bicycles this morning. Bucket washing off the dusty frames and lubing chains. Paul had some personal business to attend to.
The afternoon…
Hermann has managed to maintain their brick buildings throughout the downtown area. It is very reliant on tourists during the year but especially in October. Oktoberfest season is the bread and butter with beer gardens and several local wineries. Monday (today) was a quiet day in town… perfect. Easy to walk around…no traffic.
We pretty much checked out Hermann historic district where the restaurants, wineries, breweries and antique-junk shops are with our own walking tour.

Things I see…

After our walking tour a few of us took the car for a grocery run for the final 3 days of lunch/snacks and breakfast. We are ready to ride tomorrow!
Since it’s Monday most of the restaurants are closed but we found a place called Zydeco that had really good creole/cajun food. The conclusion by all was that Hermann has good food, friendly people and beautiful brick buildings. With the amount of parking spaces and inns, bnb’s, suite rentals and trolley cars the weekends in October must be CRAZY busy!!
Tomorrow is 35 miles to Augusta MO. Katy is riding my red bike. She’s taller than me but we raised the saddle and… put flat pedals on.
I’m truly enjoying the stories/photos of your latest journey! Thanks again for sharing!
