Day 27. Everybody was outside today!

9/20/2025. Saturday

Holland to Muskegon MI

Stats: Miles: 52 AIS: 4:39. Speed: 11.2 mph. Elev. 751ft

Back on another Lakeshore Drive.

We wanted to see a few more things around Holland before we headed north today. First stop was the Dutch Windmill. In the spring they have a tulip garden but today we viewed it from the marsh. It is the only operating Dutch Windmill in the US.

Looking across the pond toward the windmill. Not sure what the boat people are doing.

Our next stop was the Holland State Park and the red lighthouse. Also built by the first Dutch residents. The park was beautiful. We’re back to the Lake Michigan sand dunes.

It seems this part of Michigan the sidewalks are where you ride. They actually turn them into paths even when they cross parking lots.

Striped path in the parking lot. This happens to be a bicycle shop too
The red lighthouse

The homes on the lake near the State Park were impressive. Gigantic big homes… enormous!

This home was just above the red lighthouse. Do they still call them cottages?

After these two pit stops we were headed north on yet another Lakeshore Drive headed to Grand Haven… about 20 miles.

There was a bicycle path but this morning it was busy, busy with casual cyclists, runners and walkers. The road had a nice shoulder and was also smooth so we chose the road. There were several serious cyclists out this morning on the same road. Always a sign of a good route!

Passed by parks with Saturday morning soccer games, farmers markets and found a Latin international festival in Grand Haven. The festival was on the waterfront so we bought some delicious street tacos for lunch and sat for awhile and enjoyed the day!

Leaving Grand Haven. Note the marina with a Holiday Inn on the dock

Our destination in Muskegon was another pleasant 18 miles. Because it was a little cloudy today it wasn’t as hot as the past 4-5 days. We were both really comfortable all day. Even though we were following the shoreline we never could see Lake Michigan. The road was far enough off the shore. From our road the driveways to the homes along the shore were unbelievably long. Big long, long, long driveways. I wish now I would have photographed one.

We pulled out in a driveway for a quick stop and noticed this tree root sculpture
I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a concrete Catholic (or any denomination) church before. Kind of like a bunker in the front… weird? Interesting?

It was just a pleasant ride to Muskegon and when we hit the city limits we were back on a bicycle trail. It took us right by the Muskegon Brewery (original name). It was in a massive building overlooking their waterway… it was 3:00pm so we had to stop.

Brewery is on the 2nd floor

The Pearl Seas cruise ship leaving port. There’s a Great Lakes Cruise from Milwaukee to Toronto with many other stops.
First sign we’ve seen that designates the distance cars must give bicycles!

We are camping tonight at a nice campground called Fisherman’s Landing. It’s not super big and really nice. The bathrooms are really nice too. We are expecting rain starting tonight and into tomorrow. We asked the campground office if we could set up in the pavilion. She said that would be okay so we did. We’re hoping to be dry or mostly dry. Could be 1/2” of rain tonight and tomorrow!

Tugboat outside our pavilion.
Setting up our tent just before it gets dark.

Tomorrow we planned for a shorter ride due to the rain. We will be on bike trails the entire ride. As a matter of fact we will be retracing our route we had a couple of weeks ago when we rode from Ludington to Muskegon. I expect we will intersect within a mile or so from camp. We have 2 days left in Michigan, then a ferry to Wisconsin and a ride back to Green Bay.. Suamico specifically. Almost there!

  1. The church in Muskegon is St. Francis de Sales/ Our Lady of Concrete. At one time the largest poured concrete building in the US. Enjoy your final miles in Michigan.
