Day 32

Mosquito count: zero. We’ve been told there aren’t mosquitos on Kodiak… biting flies? Yes, but we can’t prove that yet
Kodiak Bear count: 0. Scat: 0
Ferry by night. We made it through the night on the ferry. There was some rocking and rollling in the middle of the night but not enough to bother me or get me seasick… which I am prone to. We arrived in Kodiak at 8:15am.
I love these fishing towns.
They announced that everyone could go to their cars. We had to work to squeeze between the cars to get into our van. There’s an advantage to the slimmer people. Some folks had to wait until a few cars left before they could wiggle in.
Last to load… first to unload. We were off the ferry really quickly this morning. We went to have coffee and a bite and to the visitor center for info and noticed tgey were still unloading the ferry. It’s definitely slow! I took a good video of the turntable car offloading.
Explore Kodiak by car. We took a drive to Fort Abercrombie and Miller Point which was just a few miles away. We hiked a couple of short trails in the area. This was where the US military was stationed in 1942-43 to defend against the Japanese invasion after they overtook a of a couple of the Aleutian Islands. There were remains of bunkers and cannon sights etc.
I was more attracted by the heavy moss covering the Sitka spruce trees. The woods were dark and mossy. It is a rainforest there.
Next on the lineup for today was to stop at the kayak/bike shop when they opened to check on sea kayaking for tomorrow morning. We signed up for 9am…wind pending. The forecast is for windy and they may cancel it. We are suppose to hear tonight about the status. Fingers crossed on that happening.
Chiniak Point. We did get advice from the shop owner to head down to Chiniak Point to camp tonight. He said it is not as many tourists as the Surfers Beach location. We took the advice. What a nice drive in and out of little bays to get to this destination. It was shaping up to be a nice day. No wind, no rain, party cloudy and moderate temp (55’F). We are getting used to high 50’s.
We found a little pullout right on the beach with nice views around us and a bald eagle perched right above our van.
We made a really nice grilled sockeye salmon for dinner tonight that our friend Jana gave us from her freezer.
We bought some firewood planning to have a beach campfire tonight. We took a beach walk after dinner… saw a sea otter…and then it started to rain again. A pretty steady rain. This could dash my beach fire plans.
Seals! As I was brushing my teeth looking out at the water before bed I spotted a pod of seals swimming along the shoreline. Unfortunately no photos of that. I had toothbrush instead of phone in my hand. But it was fun to see. It was about 10pm or so. Remember it’s still light out!
We have to getup early for kayaking. We meet at 9am and there’s a construction single lane delay. We’re over an hour away. Up and out early tomorrow morning!
We have all day tomorrow in Kodiak and 3/4’s day Friday. So a bit more time to explore… and maybe see a Kodiak bear if we’re lucky.
