Mosquito count: campsite in am: high Whitehorse: low
Since we are back traveling north and headed to Whitehorse, Yukon we had another opportunity to visit the Carcross/Tagish First Nation cultural center. It was pretty busy with cruise ship busses last time we were here. This time it’s only 9am and the first busses don’t arrive until about 10am. So it’s quiet and a good time to visit.
The Carcross Commons is a cute little coffee shop and small merchant shops designed in First Nation graphics. The coffee was really good too!
Carcross Sand Dunes. Just north of Carcross is the Carcross Desert sand dunes. That’s a real surprise. They covered a large area north of town.
We arrived in Whitehorse well before noon and found a campground for a few days. We have several tasks to accomplish besides visiting the area. Tasks Day: Laundry, grocery store, shower and maybe van washing!
Also not to be forgotten is to visit our former Billings friend, Lenore, that has live in Whitehorse for many years. She raised her children in Billings and when all of our children were grade school age we did several family things together. Lots of good memories. We haven’t see each other in years now. Looking forward to that reunion.
The forecast is for rain tomorrow. So we might be exploring indoor Whitehorse places. Lenore has been giving us lots of suggestions.
Gather Cafe & Taphouse. . Accurate name for this dinner choice tonight. Combines an artsy space that creates blown glass and cafe that has creative tacos and bites. The inside has that creative artsy atmosphere and is half glass solarium so it lets lot of light in. Perfect for the wet dreary sky outside this evening.
A little drive along the Yukon River heading back to camp. This is called Miles Canyon. We hope to bike or hike to that bridge below.
Searching for block ice. We carry a cooler for a little more refrigerator space. We started the trip with frozen water in milk jugs that lasted quite awhile. But now we are relying on ice purchases. Sometimes it is hard to find block ice. This turned out to be one of those times. We tried 3 grocery stores (Canadian Superstore, Walmart, Sav On, Petro Canada gas station, and Canadian Tire… then finally it was Integra Tire gas station for the win! Fortunately all these places were in the same area. They even had our favorite kind…flatter rectangular blocks as opposed to the cube block style. They fit nicer in the cooler. It’s the small things😜
Canoes on cars! We are in the land of water and so many campers and cars are carrying canoes…. not kayaks. Big old heavy canoes (aluminum, royalex and such). Rugged backcountry canoes. Warms my heart. We have yet to launch our inflatable kayak. Lacking opportunity combined with weather. If will happen… eventually.
